Tutor Learning and Academic Resource Center (LARC) January 2015-June 2016 University of California, Irvine LARC's mission is to create independent, confident learners by connecting successful students trained as facilitators with peers enrolled in historically challenging courses, and by providing creative study strategies and encouraging active involvement in the enthusiastic pursuit of academic success. LARC connects "what to learn" with "how to learn" in a student-centered, collaborative learning experience. As a LARC tutor, I tutored UCI's freshmen and sophomore students in biology and general chemistry and worked with them to help them achieve the best grade in the class. My goal is not to just help students memorize information but to help them become independent learners. I constantly strive to help develop strong critical thinking skills. Program Coordinator Saturday Academy of Law September 2013 – Present UC Irvine School of Law Saturday Academy of Law (SAL) gives 9th grade students from the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) an opportunity to expose themselves to the legal profession while improving their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. I started as a Teaching Assistant for the SAL program during my Freshmen year, became the Lead Teaching Assistant in my Sophomore year and now, I am the Program Coordinator for SAL. My responsibilities include: • Coordinate with Higher Education Coordinator and Teachers in the Santa Ana Unified School District to recruit high school freshmen students for the program • Help high school freshmen with their writing assignments, and understand the first amendment • Lead discussions on the freedom of speech, and its limitations • Being the first point of contact for 10 other Teaching Assistants • Research and apply for donations Lab Manager Longhurst Lab, UCI School of Medicine April 2013 – Present University of California, Irvine The Longhurst Lab investigates the mechanisms of activation of cardiac sympathetic afferents during myocardial ischemia, and neurophysiological basis of acupuncture. My research project investigates neural mechanisms underlying peripheral opioids in modulation of cardiac excitatory reflex responses induced by activation of cardiac sensory nerves with ischemic mediators. In November 2014, I presented my findings on "Role of Opioid μ-receptors in Regulation of Ischemic Mediator-evoked Cardiac Reflex" at the Southern California Conferences for Undergraduate Research. In November 2015, I presented a follow-up to my previous research, "Role of Opioid receptors in Regulation of Ischemic Mediator-Evoked Cardiac Reflex" at the same conference. As a lab-manager, I • Perform surgical procedures such as cannulation of blood vessels, intubation, anesthesia, and thoracotomy on rats, and cats, along with the Principal Investigator (PI) • Search literature and stay updated on current developments in field of cardiovascular diseases, myocardial ischemia, and opioid receptors • Analyze the data, interpret the trends and patterns, and evaluate the progress of the experiments • Apply for grants, awards, and fellowship regarding our current research • Manage the daily activities of the lab and mentor lab students in lab procedures Discussion Leader UC Irvine August 2014 – September 2014 University of California, Irvine University Studies 83 (Pathways to Success) and University Studies 84 (Bridges to Success) course was designed to help first-year students transition successfully to the University of California, Irvine and develop strategies to enhance their University experience. Through lectures, discussion, course assignments and activities, students identify attributes, tools and techniques to increase their overall success, learn about campus resources and programs designed to support students' transition and enhance their academic development, and develop a personal action plan to guide their career at UCI. As a Discussion Leader, my responsibilities include: • Lead discussion for 20 students, including international freshmen • created lesson plans around lecture topics such as university academic culture, student retention, sources of motivation, locus of control, goal setting, effective decision making, and college experience of Millennials • Corrected, graded, and assigned grades for weekly writing assignments, and personal action plan • Hosted office hours, and let students know about different resources on campus Peer Educator Student Transition Services January 2013 – July 2014 University of California, Irvine Housed within the Division of Undergraduate Education, Student Transition Services provides programs and services for transfer, first-generation college, low income, former foster youth, and/or disabled students to thrive and succeed at UCI. As a Peer Educator, my responsibilities include: • Created “Managing Commitments” tip-sheet for transfer students that will be used during Transfer Success, transfer workshops, and transfer orientation • Conduct one-on-one counseling sessions to help students evaluate their own academic needs, and share campus resources • Provide suggestions to transfer and international students on getting involved on campus, going to office hours, and considering research • Facilitate discussions, publicize workshops, and develop academic tip sheets I am fluent in Hindi and Gujarati as well.
